There are many iconic horror movie villains but which are the scariest? This is my definitive list of the top ten most frightening monsters.
10. Lipstick-Face Demon (Insidious - 2010)
The Lipstick-Face demon (aka Darth Maul) is one of the scariest monsters from a PG-13 film. His jumpscare scene is probably my favorite of all time because his face is just so creepy. Now all he needs is a better name.
9. Smile Entity (Smile - 2022)
The Smile Entity is a skinless humanoid monster that feeds on driving people insane. While I believe the first hour and a half of this movie isn’t great, the last fifteen minutes really make it up for me. The entity’s multiple rows of teeth makes for one of the scariest creatures I have seen in modern horror.
8. Pyramid Head (Silent Hill - 2006)
There are very few things more terrifying than a ripped man wearing a giant steel pyramid on his head dragging a ridiculously large knife behind him. While the movies he appeared in may have been terrible adaptations, they can never make me hate this beautiful pyramid wearing hunk.
7. Cenobites (Hellraiser - 1987)
The Cenobites are basically demons from another dimension that serve to please through bodily mutation and pain. The scariest part about them is the graphic mutilation they commit once summoned. They enjoy some kinky stuff.
6. Jean Jacket (Nope - 2022)
Jean Jacket is a giant flying alien creature with a suction hole on it’s underside. The scene where we watch as a crowd of innocent people are slowly digested made me physically sick. I think the best way to describe this movie would be “Jaws but the shark flies and is a Lovecraftian alien instead of a shark.”
5. The Thing (The Thing - 1982)
The monster from “The Thing” is a shapeshifting, hive-minded, space organism. The thought of being trapped in Antartica with an alien that can pretend to be my friend is certainly a horrifying idea. Thankfully, the creatures weakness is exploding.
4. Samara (The Ring - 2002)
Samara is the creepy little girl that crawls out of TV’s and kills you for watching her tape. Knowing that you only have 7 days left to live before your certain death is dreadful. I know I wasn’t the only kid who genuinely thought I was going to die after watching a scene from the ring on YouTube.
3. Leather Face (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - 1974)
When I heard of this movie as a young lad, I believed it was a documentary. I really thought that there was a chainsaw wielding cannibal that just kills and eats people in Texas. Needless to say, Leather Face is very scary because he is very possible.
2. Xenomorph (Alien - 1979)
Being impregnated through your mouth by a giant alien crab thing is textbook scary. Whats even worse is the creature that pops out of your chest before growing rapidly into the scariest alien ever conceived.
1. Michael Myers (Halloween - 1978)
Michael Myers is arguably the face of horror movies. His mask is iconic and rightfully so. Even though it is just a modified William Shatner mask, it creates a character that sends a chill down your spine everytime you see him.

This has a lot of personal voice even right off the bat, I can tell you watched these films and have a very opinionated perspective on what are the scariest ones. I additionally like lines like Beautiful pyramid wearing hunk which makes a rather bleak list into one that adds light and comedy. I enjoyed the part where you added your own perspective about the monster from insidious and your favorite scene from it, wishing that you added personal narrative or perspective to all on your list.
Your tone reminds me of the chilling storytelling tales from folklore. Who do you think will win in a fight between Leather Face and Michael Myers? Most of these are really popular ones, but it would be awesome if you could add some underrated movies too. Great post, by the way.
